Who + What
CYCLIST(S)
Tegan Phillips, ultra-endurance cyclist and cartoonist - representing women’s cycling advocacy team Wintergreen Barrier Breakers. To be joined for various stages by various other women cyclists.
THE RIDE
A 3,000km tar loop in the Western Cape, split into 10 stages to be ridden over 10 days, with an average of Xkm per day with Xevelation per day.
SUPPORT CREW
On the road support: 6 people split over 2 vehicles: team leader, main driver, mechanic, OT, and a food person.
BASECAMP
A basecamp crew comprised of WGBB team and the WGBB sponsors, coach Reece McDonald from Science2Sport and an on-call doctor
Why
(1) TRAINING FOR THE AFRICA RECORD
This is foremost a training ride, in preparation for setting the women’s world record for cycling from Cairo to Cape Town in 2022.
(2) RAISING BIKES FOR KHANYE AND YOMOLELA
Aiming to pair this with the campaign being run by WGBB and our outreach partner Khaltsha Cycles to raise two road bicycles for two aspiring female cyclists from Khayelitsha, Khanye and Yomolela. These bikes will enable them to ride the Cape Town Cycle Tour in October.
(3) CELEBRATING SA WOMEN IN SPORT
To celebrate SA women’s month (August) by shining a spotlight on women’s cycling, having various women cyclists come and join for different stages and share their stories as part of the story of the ride.
When + How
THE ROUTE
Starting with a long ride in Cape Town, meandering through an array of towns within the Western Cape, and finishing back in Cape Town.
THE DATES
Departing from Cape Town on (day) 1st August 2021, returning 10 days later on (day) 10 August 2021.
ACCOMMODATION PLAN
Camping with vehicle rooftop tents, where possible, to best simulate the 2022 plan. But also a few houses of friends and guesthouses where most convenient.
STORYTELLING PLAN
Capturing this with a professional photographer and videographer who will join for the whole trip, as well as on social media and through traditional press mediums.
